1. Use Radiator Reflector Foil
Place metallic sheets (radiator reflector foil) behind your radiators to reflect heat back into the room instead of letting it escape through the walls.
You can get the foil easily on amazon this is the one we use - https://amzn.to/408nC9F - dont take my word for it. Take a look at the reviews.
I was skeptical how much this would help but it really does work. I got some for my parents too and it really makes a difference in a old house especially when most of the radiators are below a window.
2. Invest in an Electric Blanket
Electric blankets are energy-efficient and cost-effective for keeping your bed warm. Use one for pre-heating the bed or to keep cozy while relaxing.
There is a huge selection to choose from on amazon check out the electric blankets here to see which one would work for you - https://amzn.to/3DOXycg
3. Get an Electronic Hot Water Bottle
These rechargeable hot water bottles heat up quickly, stay warm for hours, and are cheaper to run than constantly refilling traditional bottles.
** The Rechargeable Hot Water Bottle That’s Changing Lives - well mine and everyone who i bought one for at Christmas as gifts!! such a simple thing that allows me to do so much more
Let me tell you about my absolute game-changer: my rechargeable hot water bottle. If you feel the cold or struggle with pain—be it tummy, back, or anywhere else—this little marvel is about to become your new best friend. 💕
Why It’s Amazing
What sets this hot water bottle apart is its clever design. It’s completely flexible, all-black, and so discreet—perfect for wearing anywhere you need it. Thanks to the handy clip, it stays in place while you move about, letting you get on with your day while staying warm and supported. For anyone dealing with pain, this is a life-saver.
You can find it on amazon here: https://amzn.to/4aaWknI
I practically live in mine—I have four now! Whether it’s hiking in the hills or walking on the beach, this bottle has made it possible for me to enjoy activities I’d normally miss on tough days when I just wanted to curl up with a traditional hot water bottle.
An Upgrade on Older Designs
If you’ve used earlier versions of these rechargeable bottles, you might remember the uncomfortable plastic base. Let’s be real: when you’re in a lot of pain, you’ll put up with a little discomfort if something helps. But the good news is that the new design is completely flexible and so much more comfortable.
Perfect for Everyone
I even bought one for my dad for Christmas, and my mother-in-law is loving hers too. It’s not just for pain relief—my mum has asked me to order one for her simply because she feels the cold and wants to stay cozy.
Cheap to Charge - even multiple chargers per day is still less money than boiling a kettle once
My Secret Weapon
I can’t recommend this enough. It’s my secret weapon that’s given me the freedom to enjoy life, even on days when I thought I couldn’t. If you’re someone who craves warmth or needs pain relief, I urge you to check out the listing and see if it’s for you.
You never know—it might just be the thing you didn’t realise you needed. 💖
Safety - These are so much safer than filling a hot water bottle or heating up a wheat bag!
4. Layer Up Windows with Thermal Curtains
Switch to thick, thermal-lined curtains to trap heat inside your home. Close them as soon as it gets dark to prevent heat loss.
There is a great selection to choose from on amazon here: https://amzn.to/40BFmMp
5. Use Draught Excluders
Block cold air from creeping in through doors and windows by using draught excluders or rolled-up towels.
Why not have a go at making one yourself they are super easy to do. Take a look on youtube there are some good tutorials.
As well as the sausage looking "thingy" that sits in front of your door there are also lots of accessories that are great for draught exclusion - you can find lots of ideas on amazon here: https://amzn.to/4j7CHBa i love the little doggie ones they are so cute!!
6. Seal Gaps Around Windows and Doors
Use self-adhesive weatherstripping or caulking to seal gaps where heat might escape.
Some of the options are available using the link above for "draught excluders"
7. Cover Floors with Rugs
Rugs act as insulation, especially on hardwood or tiled floors, keeping the heat from escaping through the ground.
8. Use Door Curtains
Hang heavy curtains over doors that lead to cold areas, like hallways or porches, to prevent drafts.
9. Reflect Heat with Mirrors
Place mirrors near light or heat sources to reflect warmth back into the room.

A smart thermostat helps you optimise heating schedules, saving energy while keeping the house warm when needed.

Ensure your furniture isn’t blocking radiators so heat can circulate freely around the room.

Close doors to unused rooms to focus heat in the areas you’re using.
13. Use a Humidifier
Moist air holds heat better, so using a humidifier can make your home feel warmer without cranking up the thermostat.
14. Hang Insulating Window Film
Apply transparent plastic film over your windows to create an additional barrier against the cold.
We use a film that is reflective as well which is great for people not being able to see in.

Place cozy throws or heated blankets on your sofa and chairs for an extra layer of warmth when lounging.

Set your ceiling fan to rotate clockwise at a low speed to push warm air down from the ceiling.
18. Use a Heated Mattress Pad
A heated mattress pad provides consistent warmth throughout the night, often costing less to run than central heating.
19. Boil Water for Cooking
Leave the oven door open after baking to let the residual heat warm the room.
I always leave my oven door and microwave door open after cooking i paid for that heat lol!
20. Create a Warm Seating Zone
