Let’s Talk About Those Flowers!

Pretty Carnations Card

So Many Questions… Let’s Talk About Those Flowers! 💙🍃

I recently shared a card over on Facebook, and I honestly wasn’t expecting the response it received! I’ve had so many lovely comments, questions, and private messages about how I created the flowers — thank you so much 💙

It has got to the point where it’s just physically impossible to reply to everyone individually, so I thought the easiest (and most helpful!) way would be to put everything together here in a blog post for you.

The Pretty Carnation Kit is available as a digital download - you can find it in the shop here:

Watch the Process

I’ve included a selection of videos so you can see the techniques in action. Some of these are quite old now, but they still show the process clearly and will definitely give you a good idea of how everything comes together.

Let’s Talk About the Flowers

The flowers on the card have been created using a combination of techniques, which is why they have that soft, dimensional, slightly frilled look.

I worked with:

  • Foam stretching/ petal stretching
  • Rolling and shaping
  • Layering to build dimension and texture

I originally started out using carnation dies, but as I experimented more, I found myself reaching for my pinking shears instead, along with a larger rose die, as I wanted to create bigger flowers with wider petals. Unfortunately, that particular rose die was from Create and Craft and is no longer available. This is exactly why putting together blog posts and tutorials can be tricky at times — when you’re using older, well-loved items from your stash, they aren’t always still available to buy.

The pinking sheers give a much more even, delicate frill along the petal edges, which I really love for this style.

If you are new to this technique and would like to use a die to start off with you can find the Spellbinders Carnation set here:

About the Materials

I know one of the biggest questions has been about the foam — and you’re absolutely right, it has been quite difficult to get hold of lately. Because of that, I’ve done my best to share links to tools and alternatives that are currently available.

You can find lots of the foam - all different colours, stamens and tools i use here

It is up to you whether you choose to create the flowers with coloured foam or white foam and colour them yourself. The foam colours really well, you can use your markers or ink pads to colour them as you will see in the videos above. I tend use more white as it is easier for me to get

I also like this green foam for leaves - https://amzn.to/4vU2qDo

Some of the exact items I originally used are no longer available (as is often the way with craft supplies!), but I’ve tried to suggest the closest options so you can still achieve a very similar look.

The rolling tool i used - Crafter's Companion Petal Distress Tool Set, Multicoloured, One Size - sadly isn't available at the moment but as i show in the video above you can do this in the palm of your hand.

I also use the Spellbinders Flower Forming Tool set which is also out of stock at the moment.

The dedicated craft iron i use can be found here: https://amzn.to/4t1v9DM

Please don't use your household iron as you will get ink transfer. It is best to have a dedicated craft iron

The Ball tool set you see me use can be found here:

Final Thoughts

This is one of those techniques that really benefits from a bit of experimenting and just having a play.

Don’t worry about making everything perfect — the beauty of these flowers is in their soft, organic shape.

I hope this post helps answer your questions and gives you the confidence to give it a try yourself 💙🍃

As always, if there’s anything you’re unsure about, feel free to reach out — I’ll always do my best to help when I can.

There are so many lovely videos on youtube for foamiran flowers

Happy crafting ✂️💙
