Folding Fun: How Inspiration Sparked My Latest Craft Project Sheets
I was inspired by Gill's card (thank you Gill) she posted the other day in our facebook group so thought it would be fun to do some tile sheets to work with. The above sheet is available as a little gift for our Patreon Club Member's so if you are a member please check out your member's area to download your Free Copy
I thought it would be fun to do some "Easy Cut Sheets" rather than just tiles as they are much easier to cut out with a trimmer or guillotine and as it is a block you can also use the sheet as a nice co-ordinating backing paper too!
A little bit about Tea Bag Folding
What is Tea Bag Folding?
Tea bag folding is a versatile papercraft technique where small, square tiles are folded into intricate designs, often resembling rosettes or stars. These folded shapes can then be layered or arranged to create stunning 3D embellishments for your cards, scrapbook pages, and other creative projects.
Is it a new technique?
It has been around a long time, i was lucky enough be shown how to do this technique by some of the amazing guests i had on my Paper Clinic shows back in the day on Create and Craft and i loved doing it, it is very therapeutic. It is one of those techniques that comes in and out of fashion or in my case when i remember about it or see a fabulous card that was made the technique.. just like iris folding or quilling
Where did it originate?
I believe Tea bag folding originated in the Netherlands around the 1980s. It was created by Tiny van der Plaas, a Dutch crafter, who is credited with developing this unique paper folding technique.
The story goes that Tiny wanted to decorate a greeting card for her nephew but didn’t have any suitable embellishments. Instead, she started folding the decorative paper envelopes from tea bags into intricate shapes and layered them to create beautiful, dimensional designs. This inventive method became a hit among crafters and evolved into the craft we know today.
Tea bag folding involves folding small, square pieces of decorative paper—often printed with symmetrical patterns—into shapes like rosettes, medallions, or flowers, which are then layered to create dimensional embellishments. Though it began with tea bag wrappers, today, specially designed papers and templates are often used.
The craft remains popular for cardmaking, scrapbooking, and other paper crafts due to its simplicity and the stunning results it achieves.
