Taking cuttings from carnations (also known as “pinks”) is a great way to propagate these lovely flowers. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it:
Select Healthy Side Shoots:
- Look for strong, non-flowering side shoots on your carnation plant.
- These shoots should be around 10 centimetres (4 inches) long and have about five pairs of leaves.
Prepare the Cuttings:
- Snip the side shoots from the main stem.
- Remove all the leaves from the bottom half of the cutting.
- Trim the base of each cutting just below the node where a pair of leaves joins the stem (about 2 mm). Add some rooting powder to the bottom of the stem
Plant the Cuttings:
- Fill a pot or seed tray with sieved multi-purpose compost.
- Insert the cuttings into the compost, spacing them evenly (about 10 mim deep).
- Make sure the leaves aren’t touching each other.
Water and Cover:
- Water the compost thoroughly using a fine rose on a watering can.
- Cover the cuttings with a plastic bag or place them in a clear plastic container.
Rooting and Potting Up:
- After a few weeks, when the cuttings are growing strongly, pot each one up individually.
- Uncover the cuttings every few days to allow fresh air circulation and reduce the risk of fungal infection.
- Once new leaves start to grow, leave the cover off permanently.
Remember, propagating carnations from cuttings is an easy and rewarding process and you can easily get loads of free plants from the one plant
** you can even take the side shoots of cut flowers so the next time you get spray carnations in a bouquet or bunch of flower make sure to check for side shoots
More about these little pots
I got some of these little biodegradable pots from a cheap store a couple of years ago and i wasn't impressed at all as over time (maybe a week of watering)they had a tendency to fall apart after watering.. i have been using these for a few weeks now and i think they are fab!! They have even slowed down the slugs a bit as it us more of a challenge for them to find the roots
- You get 96 in a pack
- They are ideas for seeds, seedlings and cuttings
- They have been specifically designed for optimal seed germination
- Manufactured in Europe from sustainably sourced wood pulp harvested from European forests
