Little Verbena and million bells hanging basket

Verbena is a varied genus of plants, mostly native to South America. These sun-loving beauties are known for their nectar-rich flowers, which attract bees and butterflies. While they tend to be short-lived, their abundance of blooms more than makes up for it.

This was mostly Verbena but i also had some million bells that needed planting so they got popped in too!

The basket was from Home Bargains it was £3.99 i quite like the purple

Growing verbena in a hanging basket is a delightful way to add vibrant colour to your outdoor spaces. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create a beautiful hanging display:

  1. Choose the Right Hanging Basket:

    • Opt for a hanging basket with good drainageMake sure it has adequate holes in the bottom to prevent water from accumulating and causing root rot
  2. Prepare the Basket:

    • Fill the hanging basket with potting soil, leaving a few inches below the rim.
    • Unpack your verbena plants by gently squeezing the bottom of the container and pulling the plant out
  3. Planting:

    • Create a hole in the soil that is slightly wider than the root ball.
    • Place the verbena plants in the holes, ensuring the top of the root ball is 1-2 inches below the container rim.
    • Firmly press the soil around the plants.
  4. Sunlight Requirements:

    • Verbena loves full sun. Hang your basket in a location that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun daily
  5. Watering:

    • Keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid overwatering. Verbena can tolerate some drought.
    • Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings.
  6. Fertilize:

    • After about 2 weeks, start feeding with a water-soluble plant food every ten days to two weeks for lush foliage and continuous flowering. I will pop a link to what i use below for you it has been such a big difference to our baskets and pots. I have been using this since before we went to Canada so for over 8 years at least. Remember a little goes a long way!
  7. Pruning:

    • If your verbena becomes too leggy, lightly trim back by no more than a third of its size.
    • Deadhead spent flowers to encourage new buds.
  8. Enjoy the Blooms!:

    • Hang your basket where you can admire the colourful verbena flowers throughout the season.
