Certainly! Making professional-quality coffee at home is easier than you might think. Here are some tips to help you brew a delicious cup:
- Choose Quality Coffee Beans: Start with fresh, high-quality coffee beans. Look for beans with classic flavours like chocolate and nuts.
- Grind Your Own Beans: Grind your beans just before brewing to preserve their aroma. Use a grinder for better consistency. Adjust the grind size based on your brewing method: fine for espresso, medium for filter coffee, and coarse for French press.
- Master the Coffee-to-Water Ratio: Use the right amount of coffee grounds for the water you’re using. A standard ratio is 1 to 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of water.
- Explore Different Brewing Methods: Try methods like French press, pour-over, or espresso. Each method brings out different flavours in the coffee.
There’s a world of brewing methods beyond the classic drip coffee maker: Experiment with different methods to find your favourite.
- French Press: Full-bodied and robust
- Pour-Over: Delicate and nuanced
- AeroPress: Versatile and quick
- Moka Pot: Espresso-like intensity
5. Pay Attention to Water Quality and Temperature: Use filtered water and ensure it’s at the right temperature (around 195–205°F or 90–96°C) for optimal extraction.
6. Brew Like a Barista: Follow the steps carefully, preheat your equipment, and pour evenly. My filter coffee machine is used every morning to get me going, I love the machine I have as it uses a thermos jug to keep the coffee warm rather than a hot plate. Hot plates are fine for diners and restaurants that sell a lot of coffee but for home use

A little advice on choosing beans..
Types of Coffee Beans: Arabica vs. Robusta
- Arabica: Smooth, sweet, and complex—like a smooth jazz playlist. Perfect for easy sipping.
- Robusta: Bold, packs a caffeine punch, and not for the faint-hearted—think heavy metal.
Single Origin vs. Blends
- Single-Origin: These beans come from one place (like a specific farm or region). They’re unique and distinct, akin to solo artists.
- Blends: Supergroups of the coffee world, combining beans from different places to create a harmonious cup. Consistent flavour year-round.
Terroir Matters
- Terroir refers to the environment where coffee grows—soil, climate, and altitude.
- Ethiopian coffee might taste fruity, while Colombian beans could be nutty. The terroir gives your coffee its unique personality.
Remember, the right coffee beans are like finding the perfect soulmate for your cup.
I have been fortunate to have travelled to the Caribbean, Mexico, The Middle East and even South America so have been able to try lots of coffee.. try different beans to see what is right for you.
